In my opinion, the gun you play won’t work for you unless it’s comfortable to play with.  This is one reason why the VM-68 is great.  There are a million ways a VM can be set up.  You can put the tank going forward right under the barrel, up and down with a vertical adapter, and you can get adapters to put the tank out of the top of the back or through the handle.  One setup isn't better then the other unless you like it.

COMBINATION
A common combo is a vertical tank with another tank coming out of the back.  I don’t know why you would need that much air but there are a lot of people that use this so there must be a reason.
VERTICAL
When I’m indoors I run a 3.5 ounce tank vertically but when it’s cold I use a 20 ounce so i don’t have to worry about pressure.  A 3.5 ounce CO2 tank doesn’t give enough pressure to support the VM when it's cold but when it's warm 3.5 will last me many games usually the hole day.  I like the vertical setup because of it’s compactness.  It’s easy to maneuver even when your huddled in a ball behind a little bunker.
HORIZONTAL BOTTOMLINE
(tank going through the handle)
I also play outdoors a lot because most of my friends own paintball guns.  I suggest this because there isn't a fee to enter and you can make whatever rules you want.  Unless your playing in a small area, in dense woods, or with a lot of people the compact setup isn't necessary.  When I’m out doors I like the gun to have a very balanced felling to it so it’s easy to run and carry with one hand.  The way I did this is with a 20 ounce run under the handle.  This is my favorite setup because if it’s balanced I can easily shot while I’m running or doing something else with the other hand.
HORIZONTAL OUT THE BACK
I run a bottomline because having the tank out of the back of the gun restricts entry to your internal parts and there's just more parts and confusion to deal with.  Anyway, there isn't that I know of any advantage of running your gun that way.
HORIZONTAL OUT THE FRONT
This setup isn't bad, it's compact, simple, and easy to use.  The problem is, I always use a expansion chamber.  I think the VM is much more reliable, consistent, and smoother with one.  It is possible to use an expansion chamber and run the tank out the front but it would be wierd.
